The Avery Dennison Foundation (ADF) is committed to making a difference in communities by promoting education access, environmental sustainability and secure livelihoods. To support ADF’s education access pillar, ADF offers two scholarship programs specifically for the children of Avery Dennison employees. These scholarships encourage students to pursue higher education and follow their passions.

The U.S. Scholars program launched in 1977 and has provided over 2,100 scholarships to children of employees in the U.S. and Canada. In 2022, ADF launched the Global Children of Employees Scholarship.  Initially supporting students in Mexico and Vietnam, the program has expanded to 10 countries, including Bangladesh, Honduras, India, and Sri Lanka, and has awarded 73 scholarships.

Third-party organizations, Scholarship America and Institute of International Education, which specialize in designing and executing scholarship programs, administer the application and selection processes for the Avery Dennison Foundation.

ADF supports scholarship programs in these countries.

Let's meet two recent recipients of these scholarships. Their stories demonstrate how ADF's support is helping young people achieve their educational goals and explore new opportunities for their future careers.

Kiyashen Chetty, a 19-year-old freshman at Durban University of Technology (DUT), is pursuing a degree in Information & Communication Technology (ICT) with a focus on Application Development. Originally from Durban, South Africa, Kiyashen's interest in technology and software development began in high school. At DUT, he is learning software development, database management, web development, networking and project management skills.

“I was ecstatic, honored and privileged to have received this great financial opportunity that would alleviate the burden of paying for my education. My family was overjoyed and proud of my hard work and dedication paying off in such a significant way,” Kiyashen says.

The Global Children of Employees Scholarship supports Kiyashen's academic journey. His father, Manogaran (aka Megen) Chetty, has been with the company for 25 years and is a Production Supervisor at Avery Dennison in Durban. When the scholarship program was introduced, Megen received an email notification from the company's HR department detailing the eligibility criteria and application process. This prompted the father and son to research more about the program and its benefits.

“The ADF scholarship has truly been a game-changer for me, providing not only financial assistance but also a sense of validation and encouragement in pursuing my academic goals. I believe that this opportunity has opened doors for me that I never thought possible, and I am excited to see where it will take me in the future,” shared Kiyashen.

Not only is the financial support immensely helpful. Kiyashen notes that having a prestigious global company support him through his academic journey is also a great privilege. The scholarship has allowed him to focus more on his studies and extracurricular activities without the stress of a financial burden. He aims to secure an internship at Avery Dennison or a similar company and ultimately aspires to become a full-time software developer.

Catherine Zhang: Achieving Academic Excellence with Avery Dennison's Support

Catherine Zhang, a 21-year-old senior at Ohio State University, is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Biology and is on the pre-optometry track. Originally from Cincinnati, Catherine's academic journey has been significantly supported by the Avery Dennison Foundation U.S. Scholars program, which she has been awarded for three years as an undergraduate student.

Catherine learned about the scholarship from her father, Xiwen Zhang, an Avery Dennison firmware engineer. She appreciates the scholarship's unique support for Avery Dennison employees and their families.

“I think it’s really cool that Avery Dennison provides so much support for their employees. I don’t hear of too many friends receiving scholarships from their parent’s employer. For me, the scholarship has alleviated the burden of financial costs or the need to balance a job to help with expenses. Instead, I can focus on my studies, volunteer opportunities, extracurricular activities, prepare for tests and maintain a healthy balance in my life, which is crucial to avoid burnout,” Catherine reflected.

The scholarship has given Catherine the flexibility to participate in volunteer opportunities such as assisting in an optometry research lab and participating in Special Olympics vision screenings. It has also allowed her to prepare for the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) and apply to optometry schools without worrying about needing to work to help cover her education expenses.

“The OAT and its preparation courses are expensive, but the scholarship has alleviated those concerns, enabling me to dedicate my full effort and time to my studies. I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity to pursue my academic and career goals with peace of mind."

Through the Avery Dennison Foundation’s U.S. Scholars program and Global Children of Employees Scholarship, students like Catherine and Kiyashen can pursue higher education and personal growth opportunities without the burden of financial stress. Investing in employees' children highlights the foundation's commitment to supporting the next generation.
